Starting next year, AT&T will be transitioning its DirecTV satellite business name to an umbrella moniker AT&T Entertainment Group — a move which was expected. An internal company memo said AT&T plans to change all of its TV product names to AT&T Entertainment once it establishes its “next generation TV platform” — news which first broke via DSL Reports.

“The iconic AT&T brand – one of the world’s most valuable and admired – is our brand,” AT&T said in an internal company memo. AT&T is looking to consolidate DirecTV’s satellite TV subscription operations with AT&T’s U-Verse fiber-based TV subscription business.

Since its completed its $48.5 billion of DirecTV in July, AT&T senior executives has indicated a name change would be probable.

Back in August, John Stankey, CEO for AT&T Entertainment & Internet Services, said the goal is to move to a single architecture for all TV and broadband users to result in a “consolidated, single platform over the next 24-36 months.”

After the completion of its DirecTV acquisition in July, AT&T has been added elements to the DirecTV logo, which includes AT&T’s blue global logo as well as the added tagline: “Now part of the AT&T Family.”

Starting in January, the tagline will be dropped with just the blue globe and the DirecTV name remaining. Additionally, U-verse will also show the AT&T globe and the U-verse name.
