Family viewing isn’t dead. It’s on cable.

You’d expect Disney’s original movie “The Descendants,” an amusing take on what happens to the sons and daughters of Disney’s most despicable villains, to be a big hit with kids, and it was.

“Descendants” was the most-watched cable show among kids 2-11 and tweens 9-14 in two years.

But what’s more interesting is this: The movie was also a big hit with their parents.

“Descendants” was the No. 2 program of the week among adults 18-49 on cable, averaging a 1.4 rating, according to Nielsen.

The movie, which aired Friday at 8 p.m., also ranked 12th overall for the week on broadcast and cable.

“Descendants” is the sort of family program that’s rarely seen on television anymore.

Media buyers have lamented the loss of the family hour, because advertisers like being able to reach kids and parents at the same time. Kids can see an ad for something, turn to their mom or dad, and ask for it right away.

When they’re not watching TV together, that’s not possible.

Broadcast has nearly abandoned family shows. A handful of reality programs target families at 8 p.m., but the networks also air more sophisticated programs such as “Mom” and “Bones” there.

Disney, which is not ad-supported but does get sponsorships, has nicely filled the void left by broadcast with shows that can appeal to kids and parents.

The key is having something in a kids’ broadcast that can appeal to older people. For “Descendants,” that’s references to movies Gen Xers grew up watching, such as “Aladdin.”

But the network has also done it with regular programming. For example, “Girl Meets World,” a spinoff of the 1990s show “Boy Meets World,” is Disney’s top 18-49 show, averaging 1.14 million viewers.

A third of the show’s audience is 18-49s.
